GRE study lays a lot of emphasis on vocabulary. Questions related to vocabulary are asked in the English section of the GRE exam. Many students try to memorize vocabulary as a part of the preparation for the exam but memorizing vocabulary is not the best way to learn new words. This is because you may forget them easily and ultimately, you will not be able to use those words in you speech or in your writing. The best way to learn vocabulary is to read more and more books that contain challenging words. This will also give you the context in which you are referring to the word.
GRE books are available that contain an exhaustive list of around three thousand to four thousand words that are important from the exam point of view. It is advisable that students start preparing for GRE exams much in advance especially the GRE wordlist because towards the end you may brush through these words but you will hardly remember them and you may not even be able to recall their meaning. Read all kinds of different subjects and diverse passages to strengthen your vocabulary. Slowly, over a period of time you will notice yourself that your language has picked up those new words that you read.
Always keep a dictionary handy so that if you do not know a meaning of a particular word in the passage that you are reading, you can refer to it. However, counselors also suggest that if you only have a couple of months till you take the GRE test, memorization might be your only option possible. At least two sections of the GRE, namely the analogies and antonyms section depend largely on the knowledge and power of vocabulary.
There are many GRE vocab exercises that are available on the internet. It is advisable to take the same.
